So here’s the story morning glory.
This girl (me) loves to create pretty things.
I also REALLY love to buy pretty creative supplies. (it’s an issue)
Because I like to do so many different things, AND I have this problem where I have a hard time finishing projects, I have unfinished projects EVERYWHERE!! I had stuffed them away in nooks and crannies for about 10 years and when we started moving into the art cabin….BLAM….there they all were. I have promised myself to start plugging away.
I used to have a business and we sold hand stitched pictures and pillows at craft fairs. I stitched so much that when we decided to be done, I didn’t want to stitch anything.ever.again. I decided to pick up this unfinished project the other day and guess what? I kind of like stitching again! How cute is this pattern?! Pam Garrison is one of my favorite artists.
There are also approximately 5 unfinished quilts lying around. I would start one and set it aside and then start another one because…well…I’d get bored with the 1st one. I know, I know. This beauty was one I had completely forgotten about and am so excited to work on again. I have promised myself I will finish it before the end of July, I’ll let you know how it goes.
It has also been really fun to find things that I had bought to teach at retreats and actually make them as samples for a class in the ART CABIN!!! Because it’s here and I can finally teach classes!!! WOOHOO!!! It’s so nice to be able to do small classes and not have to have a full blown retreat to do it.
I love mixed media. It is my favorite way to create art. I am lucky to be able to draw a stick figure, so drawing something and making it look really good is probably not in the cards for me. I can sketch a little and have mad doodling skills so maybe someday I will be able to do something artish like that, but for now mixed media is the thing for me. It’s messy and not meant to be perfect; that’s good for me because I don’t have to be perfect to be able to play. I can use ALL of the different supplies I have
hoarded collected over the years. Paints, stencils, stamps, ephemera, scrapbook supplies….oh how I love them all. My friend and I are gathering every chance we can to work our way through Kelly Rae Roberts online classes. Yay!! Makes me so happy when my hands are covered in gesso and matte medium.
I had spent the last couple of years not using my creative brain at all. My craft room was chuck full of stuff, so full I couldn’t even get in there to do anything. I had fallen into a slump and honestly thought I had lost my excitement about doing anything creative. When I started unpacking all of my supplies it started coming back to me. I started spending a little time out here making things and pretty soon I began to crave spending time working that part of my brain. It has been SO RAD!!!!
Here’s what I came to realize about creating. I NEED it. It makes me happy, soothes my soul, calms my nerves, and is a great way to get out of my head. Kelly Rae says to let your inner child take over when you create, push that critical adult brain gently to the side and let the fun WILD HEART inside of you come out to play.
What is your favorite art medium?
How do you keep your creativity flowing?
Do you quilt? stitch? sew clothes? Why?
How does it make you feel when you give yourself permission to make good stuff?
Did you know that cooking/gardening/planning a party/and a 100 different other things can be your creative strength?
What inspires you?
Spend a little time this week finding out the answers to those questions if you don’t already know and MAKE SOMETHING!! If you have something you want to try, chances are there are 1,000 videos online that can teach you. Remember you can get a free month to Brave Girls University by using marciwelcker as a promo code.
